Welcome to the South Porcupine Fire Department 100 Year Anniversary website.
Established after the tragic fire of 1911, the South Porcupine Fire Department (SPFD) has been answering emergency calls for 100 years. Over this time the hard work of many volunteer fire fighters has made a difference in many peoples lives and the current volunteer fire fighters continue this tradition today.
Over the years the South Porcupine Fire Department has seen many faces pass through its doors, has undergone numerous changes and continues to play an important role in the town of South Porcupine and within the City of Timmins Fire Department.
This website has been created to provide information about the South Porcupine Fire Department, highlight its long history, remember the many people who have been involved in the SPFD and provide information for those who will be attending the 100th Anniversary celebrations which will be taking place July 22, 23 and 24 of 2011.
A message from the District Chief,
In 2011, the South Porcupine Fire Department will turn 100 years old and will be hosting a centennial event that will remember the tragic Porcupine Fire of 1911, highlight our proud past and look towards our bright future.
The South Porcupine Fire Department was developed in response to the Porcupine Fire of 1911 that devastated the mining camps in the area. In fall of 1911, a volunteer fire fighting brigade was established to prevent such a tragedy from happening again.
To mark the 100th Anniversary of the South Porcupine Fire Department, a 100th Anniversary committee has been created to organize the many events that will be taking place from July 22-24th, 2011 in South Porcupine.
We are currently trying to develop a complete list of all retired South Porcupine Volunteer Fire Fighters and their spouses in order to send out invitations to this historic event. We are also trying to identify the fire fighters in historic photographs that we have at the fire hall and are looking for historic documents, photos or artifacts that we would be able to put on display during the event. If you know the contact information of any past members, might be interested in helping to identify people in our historic photos or have historic items that you might be willing to share for this event, please contact the South Porcupine Fire Hall or myself.
I would like to thank all retired and current South Porcupine Volunteer Fire Fighters for the years of service and dedication they have provided to the South Porcupine Fire Department, the community of South Porcupine and the City of Timmins. I hope to see many of you at the 100th Anniversary celebrations in 2011.
District Chief,
Rick Byrnes
